The Bible: America’s Source of Law and Liberty

In this well researched and thoroughly documented book, Stephen McDowell presents an outstanding record of how God and the Bible are the source of America’s laws, educational philosophy, and transcendent greatness. This book gives indisputable evidence that our country was founded on and made great by our forefathers’ reliance on God and His Holy Word. America’s future well-being and prosperity is dependent upon all citizens learning this great heritage. It is especially important for today’s elected officials to uphold these Biblical principles that were woven into the very fabric of our society and to create legislation in the prism of a Godly worldview.

Endorsements:

“For years, we at WallBuilders have been working to teach the Biblical and constitutional principles of good governance, especially through our annual Pro-Family Legislators Conference. Many of those principles are now clearly set forth in Stephen McDowell’s new book, The Bible: America’s Source of Law and Liberty. Stephen shows that the single greatest positive influence in forming our unique constitutional government was the Christian faith, and that adherence to its fundamental ideas as set forth in the Bible made us the most free and prosperous nation in history. If we are to retain these blessings, both elected officials and citizens must understand and apply the principles of this book.”
David Barton, Founder and President, WallBulders

“This latest book by Stephen McDowell is a great resource for anyone who desires to know the true source of law and liberty in America. For decades, American Family Association has worked to restore biblical values in our culture and this book by Stephen is a great tool to do just that.”
Tim Wildmon, President, American Family Association

“When a select 4% of the population of the world (Americans) have produced more books, more plays, more symphonies, copyrights, patents and Nobel prize winners than the other 96% combined, there has to be a reason. That reason is spiritual. America is more than just a physical place. Modern revisionists have aggressively excised the spiritual heritage of America. Stephen McDowell reminds us of the ingredients, such as the entrepreneurial spirit and the Protestant work ethic, that comprise the ‘Spirit of America,’ this sweet Land of Liberty, this lighthouse for the world.”
Bob McEwen, Former U.S. Congressman, Ohio, National Speaker

“Stephen McDowell has a gift for taking timeless Biblical truths and applying them to the issues of today. What sometimes appear to be new, complex issues in our culture are not that different from those faced by previous generations. Stephen not only reminds us of the immutable truths and solutions implemented by the founding era, he shows us how to renew our nation by restoring these same principles of exceptionalism to our society before all liberty is lost.”
Rick Green, Former Texas State Legislator, National Speaker, Author, Radio Host

The American Dream: Jamestown and the Planting of the American Christian Republic

America is a unique nation in history. No nation has been as free, prosperous, charitable, and virtuous. This has nothing to do with any inherent value of the American people, but has to do with the valuable ideas upon which she was founded. Seven foundational ideas are examined that produced the American Dream, all of which are Biblical in their origin and were planted by the early settlers.

The first seed principles were planted in Jamestown 400 years ago. Though often ignored, Christianity was vital for the beginning of Virginia; God’s hand was evident in preserving the colony and in the lives of many of its founders. The American Dream looks at Rev. Richard Hakluyt, the man most influential in English colonization in the new world, and his motive “to inlarge the glory of the gospell.” It documents the important role of the Christian faith in the founding of Virginia, and shows how the colonists’ desire to propagate the Christian religion, as recorded in the First Charter of Virginia (1606), was fulfilled in Pocahontas and other native Americans. The ideas that made America exceptional were planted and grew in all the colonies, producing much fruit in the early American republic. Today, however, these ideas are under attack and are being displaced by secular ideas. For the American Dream to continue, we must remember from where we came and return the nation to its original Godly covenant. 138 pages, paperback, B19

Some Dare Call it Theocracy

Many people have charged Christians with seeking to set up a theocracy in the United States, and imposing their narrow moral views – a from of “Christian Sharia law” – on the country. According to some, anyone who would dare to allow Biblical truths to inform their world- and life- views, and especially to mention this in context of politics, government and law, are the worst form of theocrats and the greatest danger to liberty in the world. But examining the history of liberty and the work of America’s founders tells a completely different story: the Christian religion and morality are the essential pillars of free, just, and prosperous nations.

Restoring America’s Christian Education

America is a nation at risk. One primary reason for this is the mediocre educational performance that exists today, which is the fruit of a state monopolized educational system where the anti-Christian, man-centered religion of secular humanism is preached five days a week to 50 million of our youth. This is leading them and our nation into bondage.

Lack of money is not the problem in our public schools. The problem is with the philosophy that forms the foundation of education in America. Colossians 2:8 reveals there are two basic philosophies — that which is according to the world, and that which is according to Christ. A worldly or humanistic (man-centered) philosophy always brings captivity or bondage, while a Christian philosophy brings liberty. Learn of the Christian foundations of education in America: Education was centered in the home and was thoroughly Christian; the first schools were started by the church; the first common schools were started to teach children to be able to read and understand the Bible; 106 of the first 108 colleges were started by and for the Christian faith; the Bible was the central textbook; the Christian education of America’s Founders produced men of great character and thought—men who gave the world the most free, just, and prosperous nation of all time. Such education is needed to assure that America will continue its legacy of liberty.

Noah Webster and the Reformation of America

Noah Webster affected the course of education in early America more than any other person. He wrote a series of textbooks including a speller, grammar, reader, and U.S. history. His famous “Blue-Back Speller” sold over 100 million copies from 1783 through the 1800s, and was designed to allow individuals to be self-taught. Webster wrote the first exhaustive English dictionary, translated his own version of the Bible, helped to found a college, started the first magazine in America, and formed a newspaper. He was one of the first persons to publicly promote a constitutional convention in the 1780s. He secured copyright legislation on the state and national levels, and he served in civil government in many capacities.

Webster spent his entire adult life working to reform America and to provide a foundation of liberty, happiness, and prosperity for all citizens. He understood that ideas have consequences, that the battle for the future of our country would be waged in the market place of ideas, and that those adhering to Godly truth must enter into the battle in every conceivable sphere. Webster’s life gives us a great example of how to bring reform to America, or any nation, today. A look at his life and accomplishments reveal what we need to do, where we need to be involved, strategies for bringing reform, proper motives and reasons for action, and the fruit we can expect from planting Godly seeds.

No Cross, No Crown: The Life Message of William Penn

In December, 1688, William Penn was thrown in jail for expressing his religious views. While imprisoned for over eight months he wrote the book, “No Cross, No Crown” in which he states that “Christ’s Cross is Christ’s way to Christ’s Crown.” Penn’s life is a great example of one who bore the cross and, therefore, did bear the crown. He brought the crown to millions more as well.

Christ, through His death and resurrection, has brought great blessings upon His people and upon the nations throughout history that have honored him. Jesus bore the cross that we might bear the crown! However, what was true for Him is true for us. Jesus taught that we are to take up our crosses and follow Him. If we do, we will find great life and help bring it to many others. This book presents what it means to take up your cross, and tells the story of how God used William Penn to bring great blessings to America – blessings which still affect the world today.

Loving God with All our Minds

Books and Films to Encourage, Inspire, and Equip in a Biblical Worldview

Christ gave us a commission to disciple the nations. To accomplish this we are to love the Lord our God with all our heart, all our soul, all our mind, and all our strength. To live as God desires we must have a passionate heart and soul for Him, willing to do anything He asks and to follow Him anywhere. But we must also love God with all our mind and strength. We must exert energy to develop a Biblical Worldview.

To disciple nations, we must understand what the Bible teaches regarding personal growth and discipleship, and we must introduce the lost to these things. In addition, we must grow in a Biblical worldview, especially in the knowledge of how the nations can align themselves with the precepts of Godly government.

This booklet contains lists of books that will help you develop a Biblical worldview. Book lists are given for all ages including: picture books for the youngest children, literature, history, and biographies for students; resource books for adults or older children on many aspects of Biblical worldview and providential history.

Kingdom Missionaries Marcus and Narcissa Whitman: The Founding of the Oregon Territory

Marcus Whitman, a medical missionary and Christian patriot, was the man who saved the Oregon Territory and assured it would be a part of the United States. Called to the Northwest by a desire to see the Indians taught the liberating principles of the Bible, the daring action of this “man of destiny” paved the way for the establishment of the states of Washington, Oregon, and Idaho.

The tragic and sad end of the story of Marcus and Narcissa Whitman reminds us that “the blood of the martyrs is the seed of the church.” Their story clearly reveals the providence of God in the march of history-that nations do not, in the words of historian George Bancroft, “float darkling down the stream of the ages without hope or consolation, swaying with every wind and ignorant whither they are drifting” but that “there is a superior intelligence and love, which is moved by justice and shapes their courses.” The Whitman’s story will also inspire us to practice “heroic, patriotic, and Christian virtues.”
