Stewarding the Earth, A Biblical View of Economics

Stephen McDowell

God created man and the earth to be productive. He placed man in control of His creation as His vice-regent or steward. We are called to subdue, have dominion over, and replenish – that is, steward – the earth in order to meet our needs and advance His creation commission.

This original commission or cultural mandate was impacted by the fall of man but it was not abrogated. God through Christ restored to man the ability to fulfill the mission originally given to Adam, and also made it possible for man to once again have a personal relationship with God. Christ brought redemption to individuals, but also institutions and all spheres of life (including law, government, education, economics, and business).

God has restored us to stewardship. Fulfilling this role involves cultivating the land and every good thing it produces. It means discovering, rearranging, and using all of the earth’s natural resources for the amelioration of mankind and the advancement of God’s kingdom. It involves cultivating and using the talents and skills He has given us to do business here on the earth. It involves applying biblical economic principles or laws to the production, distribution, and consumption of goods and services. It entails using God-given natural resources, ideas, and energy to meet human needs and glorify Him.

The ideas in Stewarding the Earth will equip you to accomplish this divine mission. Chapters include:

Chapter 1 – Our Mission to Steward the Earth

Chapter 2 – Economics as Choice

Chapter 3 – Factors of Economic Production

Chapter 4 – Principles of Biblical Economics

Chapter 5 – The Wheel of Progress in a Christian Economy

Chapter 6 – The Role of Civil Government in the Economy

Chapter 7 – Policies for Economic Flourishing

Chapter 8 – Honest Money and Banking

Chapter 9 – The Biblical View of Work and Calling

Chapter 10 – Cyrus McCormick and Biblical Principles of Business

Chapter 11 – Characteristics of Kingdom Business in the Life of John Wanamaker

Chapter 12 – Elements of Good Personal Finance

Conclusion – God’s Principles Bring Economic Flourishing

Turning America Around

Fulfilling Our Biblical Duties to Transform the Culture, Educate Our Children, and Protect Property

Jonah ran away from the mission God gave him. Similarly, God has given a mission to His people in America, and, like Jonah, the church in general has failed to do what God has called us to do. Jonah was go to and cry against the wickedness of Nineveh. It was a pagan, immoral, evil society. God has called us to cry out against the pagan, evil, immoral culture that has been rapidly growing in America.

America needs to repent. Certainly the lost need to repent before God, and consequently we need to speak God’s truth to them. But repentance in America must begin with the church – God’s people.

Repentance is much than verbally acknowledging our wrong-doing. It is much more than a spiritual exercise of “wearing sack-cloth” and fasting. Repentance is a change of mind and way, and a return to our work and duty from which we had turned aside. It is doing that which God calls us to do. Jonah repented and went to Nineveh and proclaimed God’s truth. Under his preaching, Nineveh repented – they not only cried out to God in sackcloth, they also did the works of repentance.  We must do the same.

Stephen McDowell presents three primary things that we must do in order to bring long-term permanent change in the nation.

The Third Education Revolution

Home School to Church College

Vishal Mangalwadi and David Marshall, Editors

Two dozen contributors from many nations, including Stephen McDowell, Providence Foundation President

For one thousand years the Church has sent students to the university, The Third Education Revolution will enable universities and schools to send students to local churches. Digital curriculum, prepared by the world’s best experts and videographers, will also go to the Church online. Students will be mentored by Academic Pastors who will re-integrate character formation, problem solving aptitude, critical thinking and leadership skills with academic education. The community will help develop vocational skills through internship programs. The partnership of Church, university and technology will make high quality education affordable to virtually everyone.

Europe’s first education revolution began during the Carolingian Renaissance (8th and 9th century AD). The Church educated the clergy to “minister” to God both in the Church and the state. That’s why prime “ministers” continue to serve many nations — even if they no longer minister to God.

Martin Luther’s Open Letter to the Christian Nobility of German Nation (1520) began the second revolution. The Church educated every person to serve God as “priest and king.” That democratized knowledge and governance. Now, the secularized version of that education has become incapable of helping students find the meaning of their existence and build character.

“The Third Education Revolution is a series of essays to give you, your family, and your church the blueprint for how to create ‘Pillars of Truth’ for future generations.”

GORDON ROBERTSON, Juris Doctor. President, The Christian Broadcasting Network, Inc.

“Is there hope for us amidst this present modern designer disaster? There is! The essays in this book explain why there is hope… timely, practical, insightful, and encouraging. This book is most highly recommended.”

GEORGE GRANT, Ph.D., author, Pastor of Parish Presbyterian Church, Franklin, TN

“This book… lights a path to the triumph of truth. Here is a manifesto for a needed new revolution in education.”

MICHAEL J. MOBLEY, Ph.D., Director for Research and Innovation, Grand Canyon University Phoenix, AZ

“The university system… is collapsing spiritually, intellectually, and financially. But, right on time, Providence brings forth this volume presenting a new model. It is sustainable spiritually and economically.”

JERRY BOWYER, Financial economist, theologian, speaker, and author.

“A fierce battle is on for America’s soul. It will be won by whoever wins education.”

CHÉ AHN, Ph.D., Founder and President, Harvest International Ministry

“The Third Education Revolution, God willing, will spark a reformation to recover sanity from decades of darkness.”

SAMUEL MUSGRAVE, D.Min., Associate Pastor, Trinity Community Church, Clovis, CA

Statesman and Saint, the Principled Politics of William Wilberforce

by David J. Vaughan

Wilberforce: A Giant Among Leaders

Three years after William Wilberforce experienced a religious conversion in 1784 as a young man, he began his lifelong crusade as a Christian statesman and philanthropist. He ran for and won a seat in the British Parliament for his hometown of Hull in 1780, and in 1784 he began to represent Yorkshire, a seat he retained until 1812.

Following his conversion, he rose to leadership of the Clapham Sect — a group of evangelicals active in political, philanthropic, and religious causes. Under his leadership, the “Saints,” as they were called, championed parliamentary and prison reforms, missionary endeavors, Bible distribution, and many other religious and charitable efforts and organizations.

Statesman and Saint is a captivating look at Wilberforce’s leadership in action, particularly as it can be seen in his unrelenting forty-four-year crusade against slavery in spite of many setbacks in Parliament. He labored for eighteen years to secure the abolition of the slave trade, enduring personal criticism, deep-seated prejudice, and threats on his life for another twenty-six years before the Emancipation Bill was finally passed in July 1833. His influential book, A Practical View, laid the foundation for the moral elevation of the Victorian Era that followed his death only three days after the Emancipation Bill was passed in Parliament.

George Washington: Man of Providence

Rediscovering the Father of Our Nation

DVD Presentation filmed for American Family Association’s Cultural Institute

In this talk, Stephen McDowell uses George Washington’s own words to prove that Washington was more than a religious man – he was a man of providence. Washington spoke of the providence of God, for example, writing in 1778, referring to the first three years of the Revolutionary War:

“The hand of Providence has been so conspicuous in all of this, that he must be worse than an infidel that lacks faith, and more than wicked, that has not gratitude enough to acknowledge his obligations.”He also demonstrated the providence of God, Who preserved his life numerous times, as this talk explains through many stories.

Viewers will come away with a greater appreciation for the first president of the United States, along with much more knowledge about this influential man in history.

Topics discussed in this presentation

  • The truth about George Washington’s faith.
  • Specific examples of George Washington’s Christian character.
  • Stories from the Revolutionary War revealing God’s providence in supporting American liberty.
  • The key to George Washington’s success as a leader.
